The Port of Echuca Discovery Centre is a good first stop for getting to know the Murray River's paddlesteamer era. Give yourself time to move between the indoor displays and the riverfront wharf rather than treating it as a quick photo stop.
What to look for
- The interpretive centre, where audiovisual displays explain the inland river system and the river trade.
- The restored Evans Brothers sawmill and working steam display for a closer look at the machinery that supported the port.
- The heritage-listed Echuca Wharf, including the red-gum walkways and views along the Murray River.
- The Cargo Shed kids space, rail vehicles and the preserved remains of the PS Success when travelling with children or anyone curious about the working port.
Plan your visit
The Discovery Centre is at 74 Murray Esplanade in Echuca. The Port advises that it opens daily from 9am to 5pm, excluding Christmas Day; check its Discovery Centre information (opens in a new tab) before travelling for current arrangements. Pair the visit with a slow walk along the wharf, and allow extra time if you are planning a river cruise or a guided experience.
A wharf walk works best when you leave room to pause: the river, old timber structures and paddle-steamer stories are the point of the visit.
